How to Choose the Right Laser for Tattoo Removal (and Avoid Scarring)

Tattoo removal is one of the most requested treatments in clinic — but not all laser treatments are created equal.
Recently, we saw a client who had undergone a single sessions elsewhere and presented with textural changes, scarring, and collagen bundling in the treated area. This is unfortunately something we still see from time to time, and it highlights an important point:
👉 The type of laser — and how it’s used — matters enormously.
Not All Tattoo Removal Lasers Are the Same
1. Q-Switched Lasers (Traditional Technology)
Wavelengths: 1064nm, 532nm
Delivers energy in nanoseconds
Effective for many tattoos, especially black ink
Limitations:
Higher heat diffusion into surrounding tissue
Greater risk of skin trauma if not used correctly
2. Pico Lasers (Advanced Technology)
Delivers energy in picoseconds (faster, more precise)
Breaks ink into finer particles
Less thermal damage to surrounding skin
Benefits:
Reduced risk of scarring
Better outcomes for stubborn colours
Faster clearance in many cases
Why Do some Tattoo Removals Cause Scarring?

Scarring is not “normal” — it usually occurs when:
Excessive energy is used
Treatments are performed too aggressively
Incorrect wavelength is selected
Skin type (Fitzpatrick) is not properly considered
Insufficient healing time between sessions
👉 In simple terms: too much heat, too quickly
This can lead to:
Collagen disruption
Fibrosis (thickened tissue)
Permanent textural change
Choosing the Right Treatment Approach
At The Appearance Clinic, we take a multi-device, customised approach, which may include:
755nm (Alexandrite) for certain colours
1064nm Nd:YAG for deeper, darker pigments
Pico technology for precision and reduced trauma
We assess:
Ink colour and depth
Skin type
Previous treatment history
Presence of any existing scarring or sensitivity
👉 No two tattoos — or skins — are treated the same.
What You should look for
Before committing to treatment, ask:
What type of laser is being used?
Is the clinic using multiple wavelengths?
How do they minimise risk of scarring?
What is the treatment plan and spacing?
Do they assess your skin type properly?
If these questions can’t be clearly answered — that’s a red flag. Don't forget Google or Chatgbt - do your research, ask the questions.
Can Damaged Skin be Improved?
If you’ve had a poor outcome previously, all is not lost.
We can often improve:
Skin texture
Collagen remodelling
Overall appearance
Using treatments such as:
Pico rejuvenation
Fractional resurfacing
Regenerative therapies
The Bottom Line
Tattoo removal is not just about removing ink — it’s about protecting the integrity of your skin.
Choosing the right clinic, the right technology, and the right treatment plan can make the difference between:👉 Clean clearance👉 Or long-term skin damage
