Tattoo Removal Using Advanced Multi-Laser Technology

Tattoo removal is not a one-size-fits-all treatment.
At The Appearance Clinic, we use multiple laser platforms — including 532nm, 755nm (PicoSure), and 1064nm wavelengths — allowing us to target a wide range of ink colours more effectively than single-device clinics.
Different pigments respond to different wavelengths. Black ink typically responds well to 1064nm, while colours such as green, blue, and certain resistant pigments require 755nm technology. Red, orange, and lighter tones are treated using 532nm.
Using the wrong wavelength can result in poor clearance, unnecessary treatments, or increased risk of skin damage.
Our approach is based on selecting the correct laser for your tattoo, your skin type, and how your body responds over time.
The Difference You’re Looking For.
We have 3 lasers for tattoo removal
PICOsure 755nm
Etherea Acroma 1064nm & 532nm
Ultralase 1064nm & 532nm
Advanced Laser Tattoo Removal Rotorua | The Appearance Clinic
Tattoo Removal Using Advanced Multi-Laser Technology
At The Appearance Clinic Rotorua, we provide advanced laser tattoo removal using multiple medical-grade systems, including PicoSure®, Etherea Nd:YAG, and UltraLase Q-Switched Nd:YAG.
Most clinics rely on a single device. We use multiple wavelengths (532nm, 755nm, and 1064nm), allowing us to target a wider range of tattoo colours safely and effectively.
By combining these technologies, we can treat over 97% of tattoo inks and adjust treatment based on the tattoo’s colour, depth, and how it responds over time.
How Laser Tattoo Removal Works
Laser tattoo removal works by delivering short pulses of concentrated light into the skin.
These pulses are absorbed by the tattoo pigment, breaking the ink into smaller particles that are gradually cleared by the body’s immune system. The tattoo fades progressively with each session.
Different colours absorb different wavelengths of light — which is why laser choice is critical for effective removal.
Why Laser Choice Matters
Not all lasers treat all colours.
Using the wrong wavelength can result in:
-
Slow or incomplete fading
-
Unnecessary treatments
-
Increased risk of skin damage
Our systems allow us to match the correct wavelength to the ink:
-
532 nm targets red, orange, and some lighter pigments
-
755 nm (PicoSure) is effective for blue, green, and resistant inks
-
1064 nm safely treats black and darker pigments across all skin types
This flexibility allows us to treat multi-coloured tattoos more effectively and adjust your treatment as the tattoo fades.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Tattoo removal is a gradual process.
Most clients require 5–12 treatments, spaced 6–8 weeks apart, to allow the body time to clear fragmented ink particles.
The number of sessions depends on:
-
Ink colour and composition
-
Tattoo depth and density
-
Age of the tattoo
-
Location on the body
-
Previous treatments or cover-ups
Every tattoo responds differently, and treatment is adjusted as fading progresses.
Tattoo Fading for Cover-Up Work
Some clients choose laser treatment to lighten an existing tattoo before a cover-up.
Controlled fading allows tattoo artists to:
-
Work with cleaner skin
-
Improve detail and contrast
-
Avoid heavy, dense cover designs
Can All Tattoo Colours Be Removed?
Most tattoo colours can be significantly faded.
-
Black and dark blue inks usually respond very well
-
Colours such as green, red, and yellow may require different wavelengths and additional sessions
-
Some pigments (particularly those containing titanium dioxide or white ink) can be more resistant and may respond more slowly
-
Why Choose The Appearance Clinic
We offer three advanced laser systems, allowing us to treat a wider range of tattoos than clinics limited to a single device.
This means:
-
More effective treatment of multi-coloured tattoos
-
Ability to adapt treatment as the tattoo changes
-
Reduced number of ineffective sessions
-
Lower risk of complications when compared to incorrect laser selection
We also regularly treat clients who have had limited results or complications elsewhere, and require a more considered, corrective approach.
Rotorua-Based, Trusted Across the North Island

Many clients travel from: Tauranga, Taupō, Whakatāne, Hamilton, Tokoroa and New Plymouth for treatment.
Tattoo Removal Progress Example
Below is an example of tattoo fading after several Pico laser sessions. While every tattoo responds differently depending on ink type, depth, and location, gradual fading is typically seen over a series of treatments.
Example:
The left image shows a tattoo before any treatments and after 6 sessions and the right shows the results are After 4 Pico laser sessions, significant fading of the tattoo pigment can be seen as the body clears fragmented ink particles between treatments.
