Laser Tattoo Removal at The Appearance Clinic

At The Appearance Clinic Rotorua, we provide advanced laser tattoo removal using multiple medical-grade systems, including PicoSure®, Etherea Nd:YAG, and UltraLase Q-Switched Nd:YAG lasers.  Using these complementary technologies allows us to safely target almost every tattoo colour with precision while minimising risk to surrounding skin. By combining these laser platforms, we can effectively treat over 97% of tattoo inks and customise treatment depending on the tattoo’s colour, depth, and age.

The Appearance Clinic provides professional laser tattoo removal for clients throughout Rotorua and the wider Bay of Plenty region. Many clients travel from surrounding areas including Tauranga, Taupō, Whakatāne, New Plymouth, Hamilton and Tokoroa for tattoo fading and removal treatments.

How Laser Tattoo Removal Works

Laser tattoo removal works by delivering short pulses of concentrated light that are absorbed by the tattoo pigment. The energy breaks the ink particles into smaller fragments which are gradually cleared by the body’s immune system, causing the tattoo to fade progressively with each session.

Different laser wavelengths are used to target different ink colours, which is why professional laser equipment is important for effective removal.

How Many Tattoo Removal Sessions Will I Need?

Tattoo removal is a gradual process. and most clients require 5 – 12 treatments, spaced 6 – 8 weeks apart, allow the body time to clear fragmented ink particles, this enables an optimal clearance.  The number of sessions depends on factors such as ink colour, tattoo depth, location on the body, and whether the tattoo has been previously treated or covered.

The total number of treatments depends on several factors, including:

  • ink colour

  • tattoo depth

  • tattoo age

  • location on the body

  • whether the tattoo has been previously treated or covered

Every tattoo responds differently, and treatment plans are adjusted as fading progresses.

Tattoo Fading for Cover-Up Work

Some clients choose laser treatment to lighten an existing tattoo before having a cover-up tattoo applied by an artist. Controlled fading can make it much easier for tattoo artists to create a cleaner and more detailed cover-up design.

Can All Tattoo Colours Be Removed?

Different tattoo colours respond differently to laser treatment. Dark inks such as black and dark blue usually respond very well to laser removal. Other colours such as green, red, and yellow may require different laser wavelengths and additional treatments to achieve optimal fading

Why Choose The Appearance Clinic for Tattoo Removal

The Appearance Clinic offers three advanced laser systems specifically for tattoo removal, allowing us to treat a wider range of tattoo colours and ink compositions than many clinics.

Our Cynosure PicoSure laser delivers picosecond (trillionth-of-a-second) pulses at a 755 nm wavelength. This technology creates a pressure-wave effect that fragments tattoo pigment more efficiently while generating less heat in the skin. The result can be faster fading, fewer treatments, and reduced risk of pigment changes or scarring.

Different tattoo inks absorb different wavelengths of light:

  • 532 nm effectively targets red, orange, and some yellow pigments

  • 755 nm (Alexandrite) is ideal for blue, green, and purple inks

  • 1064 nm targets black and darker inks safely across all skin types

By combining these wavelengths across our laser platforms, we are able to treat multi-coloured tattoos more effectively and customise treatment depending on the ink composition.

Note: Tattoos containing white ink or inks mixed with titanium dioxide or other additives may respond more slowly to laser treatment. Tattoos mixed with

Tattoo Removal Progress Example

Below is an example of tattoo fading after several Pico laser sessions. While every tattoo responds differently depending on ink type, depth, and location, gradual fading is typically seen over a series of treatments.

Example:
The left image shows a tattoo before any treatments and after 6 sessions and the right shows the results are After 4 Pico laser sessions, significant fading of the tattoo pigment can be seen as the body clears fragmented ink particles between treatments.
